Croque Monsieur

Croque Monsieur is originally a Parisian cafe dish that has literally made the ham and cheese sandwich elevated to new heights.

Ingredients

  • 1 tbsp mayonnaise

  • 1 tbsp dijon mustard

  • 4 slices of sourdough bread or other good quality white bread

  • 4 slices of ham

  • Salt & pepper to taste

  • 1 cup of grated Elemental or Gruyere cheese

  • 1 cup of my béchamel sauce recipe - link here

  • 25g unsalted butter

Serves 2

Method

  1. Pre-heat the oven to 200’c fan

  2. In a small bowl combine the mayonnaise and mustard together

  3. Spread over one side of each slice of bread

  4. Place a ham slice on top of the mayo/mustard mixture

  5. Season with the salt and pepper

  6. Add 1/3 of a cup of the grated cheese on top of two of the slices of ham

  7. Place the other side on top of this and squash down with your hands

  8. Change the oven to 200’c grill setting

  9. In a frypan that can go in the oven melt the butter

  10. Place the sandwiches in the pan and fry on one side for two minutes or until nice and browned

  11. Turn over and then add half the béchamel sauce to the top of each sandwich and top with the remaining cheese

  12. Place under the grill for five to ten minutes depending on your oven until the top of each sandwich is bubbly and brown on top.

  13. Remove from oven and allow to rest for a couple of minutes and then cut in half and serve
